A Navy staff car picked them up from their pad at the New Destin Navy Shuttleport and drove them home.

“The base commander insisted, Admiral Sharp,” the driver explained.

When Sharp gave him a questioning look, he responded simply.

“Everybody in the Navy knows about Meredith, Sir. We drivers drew straws for the honor. I won.”

Sharp looked to Fuller, who shrugged.

“Word travels fast in the Navy, D.K.”

“Yes, Ma’am,” the driver said.

They had signaled ahead to Daphne and Tim. Sharp and Fuller had left Elizabeth on Sunday evening and, with twelve days in the envelope and a half-day getting to or from the envelope on each end, they landed on Ariel Saturday afternoon.

When the Navy staff car pulled up, the driver got out of the car and came around to open the rear passenger door. He saluted Sharp and Fuller as they got out of the car.

Tim Hansen and Daphne Duplay came out of the door of Sharp’s and Fuller’s house to greet them. Duplay held Thomas Hansen, now almost five months old. He had been a newborn when they left.

The driver put their planet duffles inside the door, then saluted them again before getting into the car and driving off.

“What’s all that about, Deke?” Hansen asked.

“Long story, Tim.”

Fuller walked up and gave Duplay a hug, then turned her attention to the baby.

“Oh, look at you. You’re such a big boy.”

Thomas laughed and held his arms out to here. She took him from Duplay.

“My, he’s gotten big.”

“Yes, and he’s a very happy boy. A joy, really. He just smiles and laughs all the time. Unless he needs some titty.”

“Well, I understand that, Daphne. Food is food.”

“Speaking of which,” Hansen said, “we were just waiting for you two to fire up the grill.”

“Well, let’s go, then,” Sharp said.

They walked across the beamed vault of the living room, around the big stone fireplace to the right, down the short passage to the gourmet kitchen, across the eating area, and out onto the patio, only stopping to pick up beers along the way.

Fuller gave Thomas back to Duplay, then walked over to her chaise, plopped down, lay back and sighed.

“What’s with you, Suzanne?” Duplay asked. “You act like you just ran a marathon. When you travel in space, don’t you just sit there?”

“Yes, Daphne, you just sit there, with the engines running continuously. You’re moving constantly, even when you’re just sitting still. It’s exhausting. The only times the engines aren’t running, you’re weightless and want to barf. This is the first time I’ve been stationary, on a planet, in two weeks.”

Thomas was nuzzling her chest, so Duplay pulled her bikini top off a breast and started tanking him up while the guys fussed the grill.

“Well, you’re back home now, Suzanne. Time to lay back and relax.”

Fuller lay back in the sun, her eyes closed.

“Oh, it feels so good. Daphne, you have no idea.”

“Like the first time I slept through the night after weeks of this one getting up every two hours?”

“Yeah. Like that.”

After dinner, Hansen and Duplay wanted the whole story of what went on during their trip.
